IntenCity interviews Sandip
Shankar of class XII, a young talented actor who is all too popular on schools' stages. He
has not only helped DBPC win a number of prizes in inter-school drama competitions, but
has also been the winner of numerous prizes himself. And his acting is something you
should never miss if you chance to come to DBPC grounds. Q: Describe yourself in two words. A: The Best Q: Is acting just your hobby or do you intend to take it up as your career ? A: Well it's more than just a hobby and about my career...I intend to go for a degree in communications and advertising. But...I guess u never know! Q: When there is such a variety of hobbies available, why acting ? A: Hmm..Well acting b'cos it gives me the unique opportunity to ' BE ' someone else and feel something different. When I act I don't play a role, I live in it. That's what makes it special. Q: Given the not so encouraging situation of dramas and plays in India, do you have any plans of making the present scenario better? A:The fact that the scenario is not very satisfying is a challenge. As for the plans u may just see me performing a street play on the streets or on a bus, maybe even in a shop. But I can't go beyond that right now. Even Indian Theatre needs a boost. Improvement will take time and it's not one man's work. A careful approach is necessary. Its a big task buddy! Besides I got to study now, what do ya say ? Q: Tell me something about your 'special' actors. A: Well, I love Jim Carrey, Robin Williams, Kamal Hassan and many more. Even I am not bad, I like myself too ! Q: Could you shoot a list of those coveted prizes ? A: I got the best actor (my first) for a play in a competition organised by the Lions Club. Came 2nd in the BCI Inter School in 1999 and also stood 2nd in the M.P. Birla Smarak Kosh the same year. This year in a solo act of the latter I came 2nd and won the most outstanding actor and most outstanding participant awards in E-green 2000. The list is longer but I guess this will do.
